Project Highlights
- This case study features a shopping mall in India, where we deployed a footfall counter system and helped them monitor footfall and conversion.
- The major requirements put forward by the client were tracking the in-store customer traffic, counting the number of people entering the mall, counting people visiting the defined sections, and tracking the customer’s journey within the store.
- We developed a footfall counter system that comprised hardware devices and an IoT dashboard in the web and mobile interface.
- PsiBorg utilized ToF (Time-of-flight) technology to develop an accurate, reliable footfall counting system that is in compliance with privacy and data protection laws.
About the Project
The client is recognized as the leading mall group, having established a reputation for industry excellence over many years. They approached PsiBorg because they wanted a reliable IoT-based footfall counting system for their mall.
They needed the footfall counter solution to get accurate data for calculating conversion rates on the number of buyers, seasonal traffic patterns, and differences between regions and dealer groups, to better understand how the dealership network is performing and how to positively impact sales.
After discussing the technical aspects with the client’s IT department, we offered a trial as an IoT prototype.

Challenges
The client used to follow decade-old conventional in-store product placement strategies. However, soon they realized that the strategies they followed needed to be better to drive more sales.
The most difficult business challenge was tracking in-store foot traffic in real-time to plan product placement.
We also had been running into the issue of inaccurate counts with old technology beam breaks, hardware that was no longer available, and a device that had no logic to it to meet today’s needs.
Our Innovative Solution
Footfall counter systems can be of many shapes and sizes; however, we had to build a compact and sleek system that is in compliance with privacy and data protection laws. This means thermal and CCTV cameras can’t be used, which are generally utilized in the products already available on the market.
We decided to go with ToF, i.e., time-of-flight technology, which always provides accurate and reliable footfall counting. The ToF footfall counter system works by emitting infrared red light and calculating how long it takes for the light to reflect off the surroundings and return to the sensor.
Based on the data, the device constructs a 3D image of the area. This much information allows us to filter out objects and recognize humans, even when it’s a crowded area with a bidirectional traffic flow.
Since it comes with low spatial information, no personally identifiable information is recorded.
We made a system with features as follows:
- Yearly/Monthly /Weekly data of the total number of people who went to the mall.
- Real-time data on the number of people inside the mall.
- Footfall counters in smart retail shops.
- Generating heat maps with real-time data on traffic in specific areas.
Benefits of Footfall Counter System
- The footfall counts inform the rental rates of different areas – optimizing income
- Heat maps indicate the effectiveness of marketing initiatives and the best locations to place advertising.
- Confirm visitor trends and the most popular times of the day. Putting these insights to use to improve the customer experience by having more staff available at popular times of the day.
- Tracking customer flow through the mall brings an understanding of customer behavior.
Features
1
In/Out Counting
The footfall counting system tracks the number of people entering and exiting a location, giving real-time foot traffic data.
2
Live Occupancy
The system monitors and displays the current number of occupants in a specific area to help the team optimize store space usage.
3
Staff Exclusion
The system smartly differentiates and excludes staff members from the rest of the footfall data, giving more accurate customer counts and analytics.
4
Sales Conversion Analytics
With the help of the system, store managers can analyze foot traffic data against sales figures to calculate conversion rates and improve store layout strategies.
5
Group Counting
The system can accurately identify and count groups of people entering together, improving the precision of visitor data.
6
Heat Map
Visualize high-traffic areas within a specified location, allowing malls and stores to optimize their store layout, product placement, and staffing.
Result
Our team successfully delivered a prototype of a footfall-counting system with a highly durable, quality device that offers near-perfect 99% accuracy and is in compliance with GDPR. An analytic dashboard accompanies the system and showcases all the metrics to improve operations and increase sales.
Following the success of the prototype, PsiBorg offered a complete footfall counter product that is now used by the mall to improve customer service by understanding customer behavior and preferences.
If you searched for a footfall counting system, then you have landed at the right place. PsiBorg has expertise in IoT product development and PoC to MVP development. We serve businesses by developing user-centric solutions for them that they can market.
