Project Highlights
- Our client, IndoAgro, aims to make smart agricultural technologies accessible to all farmers. They wanted us to develop an affordable IoT based Soil Health Monitoring System that can provide accurate soil and crop health data.
- Looking at the need, PsiBorg developed a set of two devices – a ground sensor unit and a gateway unit. The ground sensor unit will collect data from the field and send it to the gateway unit. Once received, the gateway then pushes the collected data from all sensors to the cloud.
- Computing and analysis of the collected data will take place in the cloud itself, and furthermore, this data can easily be monitored on mobile and web applications. This soil quality monitoring system is also capable of sending alerts and notifications, in case of an emergency.
- Our developed soil health monitoring system will help farmers monitor various soil parameters such as moisture, pH, soil nutrition level, temperature, CO2, and light.
About the Project
IndoAgro is on a mission to revolutionize the agriculture industry in Indonesia. They wanted us to develop an affordable, reasonably accurate, and precise device cluster to measure several soil parameters. Getting an accurate insight into soil health will help farmers make better and more profitable decisions.
We proposed an IoT-based soil nutrient detection system. Our IoT based soil health monitoring system includes a ground sensor unit, gateway unit, mobile app, and web app.
However, for this project, we had to design custom sensors to monitor the soil parameters.
Although, the major difficulty was getting accurate soil data and creating an economical and efficient combination of hardware and software.
Read on to learn what other challenges we faced and how we successfully delivered the project on time.

Challenges
In the current agricultural system, soil fertility and moisture content are determined by laboratory tests, and it takes days to get the results. Also, without monitoring the important soil parameters during cultivation, the farmers can suffer huge financial losses.
Every project comes with its own challenges and obstacles. In the case of the soil health monitoring system, the challenge in front of our team was to create custom sensors to monitor soil parameters.
In addition, we faced the difficulty of creating a hardware and software package that was both economical and effective. Plus, we have to design a smooth UI and UX for a better user experience.
Our Innovative Solution
Our team is superior at designing custom sensors and developing a system to get real-time information from the networks of sensors.
We developed an IoT based soil health monitoring system that is a set of two devices- a ground sensor unit and a gateway unit. The ground sensor unit installed in the field will collect the data from the soil and send it to the gateway unit.
Here, the ground sensors are designed in such a way that they collect soil data from three deep layers of soil, because how deeply the plant roots penetrate the soil totally and entirely depends on the type of crop.
So, the ground sensors are embedded in three layers of soil. These sensor units continuously collect soil data like soil condition, moisture, temperature, NPK value, and several other nutrient levels.
Later the gateway unit will then push the collected data to the cloud, where the computing of the data will take place.
This data is further monitored on mobile and web panels. To ensure the data is easily accessible and actionable, our team developed intuitive mobile and web panels.
We conducted user research to understand the user’s requirements. It helped our team to develop a smooth UI for the mobile and web panels. In order to make the app easy to operate for farmers, we designed a smooth and simple interface.
Our developed soil health monitoring system is also capable of sending notifications and alerts in case of an emergency.
In case of any irregularities, the system promptly sends notifications to the farmers device, allowing for quick and informed decision-making. This feature helps farmers maintain optimal soil conditions, ultimately improving crop productivity and sustainability.
Features
1
Soil Moisture Monitoring
The system continuously measures soil moisture levels to determine when the crop needs irrigation.
2
NPK Level Monitoring
The solution monitors the nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium levels in the soil to determine the soil fertility level.
3
pH level monitoring
Soil pH affects the overall health of the soil. The system measures the pH level in the soil indicating its alkalinity.
4
Remote Monitoring
Farmers can monitor soil conditions from any location using a mobile app or an admin panel.
5
Real-time Data Collection
Sensors collect data on soil moisture, temperature, pH levels, and nutrient content in real time.
6
Automated alerts and notifications
Alerts and notifications are sent to the user when soil parameters deviate from the set threshold, prompting timely actions.
Result
With a proper research and development strategy in place and our team of skilled developers, we helped the client expand their service by developing a smart soil health monitoring system with some unique features like:
- Th system will help in increasing the yield and choosing the best-suited crop for the location, based on soil conditions and the current environment in real-time.
- Sensors for Acidity, Moisture, pH, Temperature of soil CO2, Temperature, and light (above ground).
- Create a database and suggest a tentative crop best suited for the soil type and make suggestions for the proper use of manures and fertilizers
The project of soil quality monitoring system has proven the success of our methodology, work ethic, and expertise.
