Project Highlights
- Our very prestigious, old client gave us another opportunity to develop a project for them. This time it was about cattle monitoring to give farmers the visibility and control they need over their animals.
- Monitoring livestock is very tedious because the animals never stay in one place.
- Keeping the need in mind, our team developed a comprehensive cattle health monitoring system that includes a IoT wearable device, an IoT dashboard, and a user app.
- We added three key features to the cattle health monitoring system, namely geo-fencing, real-time tracking, and health monitoring.
- The cattle health monitoring system uses the LoRa network to transmit data from the wearable device to the central dashboard. This data is stored in the database and analyzed to provide accurate insights into the health status and movements of the animals.
About the Project
SKUAST Kashmir has devoted itself to revolutionizing the livestock farming sector by making smart agricultural technologies accessible to all farmers.
Tracking the animal’s behavior and keeping an eye on their movement, even from faraway locations, has now become essential. IoT-based cattle tracking system is one step toward the advancement of the agriculture sector.
SKUAST-K turned to PsiBorg to develop an interactive cattle health monitoring system that would provide farmers with the control they need over the animals without spending a hefty sum.

Challenges
Livestock farming comes with the huge challenge of inspecting and monitoring the livestock and making sure that they don’t get lost while grazing. It is time-consuming and labor-intensive.
Other than that, with standard cattle management, farmers face a few more problems, like not being able to detect early signs of illness and distress in cattle and other farm animals.
Currently, the only available method in the market for monitoring livestock health is to rely on physical examinations done by veterinarians. This approach is very resource-intensive.
Our Innovative Solution
Since we already have experience in developing monitoring and tracking solutions, it was easy for our team to develop the project.
According to the client’s requirements and our research, we developed a cattle health monitoring system with important features like:
- Geofencing : Here, the system will create a virtual geofence around a certain area. For cattle geofencing, the animal collars were equipped with GPS, allowing farmers to get real-time updates and alerts if their farm animals leave the designated boundary. With the combination of low power wide area cellular communication and cloud connectivity, grazing management will become more simplified.
- Location Tracking : For real-time cattle location tracking, we used the LoRa network to establish a communication link between the animal collar and the central dashboard. Thus, with the use of accurate positioning performance, and full two-way communication with the cloud, the IoT asset (animal) tracker will trigger the alarm, if an animal escapes their enclosure.
- Health Monitoring : The sensor-equipped animal collar will provide key metrics such as temperature, heart rate, behavioral metrics, feeding patterns, and more to identify any health issues in the animals. Additionally, the smart collar detects the start of the heat period in cows, which is essential for performing successful Artificial Insemination (AI).
Features
1
Location tracking and geofencing
Monitor cattle location in real-time, set boundaries, and receive alerts if cattle stray outside designated areas.
2
Remote monitoring
Get real-time insights into what’s happening on the farm without physically being present.
3
Rumination monitoring
Monitor chewing and digestion patterns to detect health issues early, ensuring optimal nutrition and overall well-being.
4
Heat Period Detection
Identify the start of estrus cycle in cattles and improve breeding efficiency by accurately predicting correct artificial insemination times.
5
Accurate Health Monitoring
The monitoring devices measure the cattle’s body temperature, heartbeat rate, and inactivity to detect any threat.
6
Notifications and alerts
Instantly receive alerts and notifications on abnormal behavior, health issues, or location breaches for prompt action and management.
Result
Our team of smart and experienced developers, designed and developed a cattle health monitoring system through which farmers can track their cattles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We integrated a GPS tracker and geo-fencing feature into the cattle health monitoring system that creates a virtual grazing boundary for farm animals. We also built an IoT admin dashboard and a user app to monitor livestock, even when you are far away from the farm, through smartphones.
Once again, PsiBorg Technologies helped its client manage their colossal challenges through the Internet of Things.
