LoRaWAN GPS Tracking for Trailers-Highlights
- Fleet operators across logistics and industrial sectors face persistent challenges: vehicles disappearing into cellular dead zones, spiralling fuel costs from unmonitored idling, and zero visibility into vehicle movements across remote or large-scale operational areas.
- The core idea was to replace expensive, power-hungry cellular GPS systems with a LoRaWAN-based GPS tracking solution, delivering kilometre-scale coverage at a fraction of the operating cost, with battery life lasting years rather than months.
- PsiBorg conducted a thorough operational needs assessment and then designed a custom IoT ecosystem: LoRaWAN GPS tracker hardware, LoRaWAN gateway infrastructure, cloud-based fleet management platform, and a mobile/web dashboard for real-time visibility.
- We delivered an end-to-end solution including multi-GNSS tracking devices with embedded sensors, geofencing and zone-based alerts, automated idle-time and standing-time monitoring, and a cloud dashboard with live maps, route analytics, and data exports, all with zero SIM or cellular data costs.
Client Testimonial

“We implemented PsiBorg’s LoRaWAN-based GPS Monitoring Solution to track our trailers across a large industrial facility where cellular connectivity was unreliable. The system has significantly improved asset visibility, reduced the time spent locating trailers, and helped us monitor unauthorized movements in real time.”
About the Project
Industries relying on large vehicle fleets, logistics, manufacturing, mining, and construction face a common, costly problem: limited or no real-time visibility over their vehicles, particularly in remote regions, industrial parks, and highway corridors where cellular coverage is unreliable or absent.
Traditional cellular GPS trackers are expensive to operate at scale. SIM cards and data plans accumulate high recurring costs, devices drain batteries quickly, and coverage gaps in rural or underground environments create blind spots precisely where visibility matters most. Fleet managers are left reacting to problems rather than preventing them.
Fleet telematics adoption is rapidly expanding, projected to grow from USD 20.22 billion in 2025 to USD 46.98 billion by 2034, with IoT-powered optimization and the demand for real-time operational visibility. Yet many businesses remain locked into legacy tracking approaches that cannot scale affordably.
A LoRaWAN-based GPS tracking solution directly addresses these challenges. By transmitting precise location data over long-range, low-power wireless networks rather than cellular infrastructure, it enables reliable, cost-efficient fleet tracking even across the most demanding industrial environments.
Our LoRa based Trailer Tracking Ecosystem
- Building on PsiBorg’s expertise in IoT product development and telematics solutions, we designed a fully integrated LoRaWAN GPS tracking device tailored for industrial and logistics fleet operations. The solution addresses the full tracking lifecycle from hardware on the vehicle to actionable intelligence on the fleet manager’s dashboard.
- Each vehicle is equipped with a LoRaWAN GPS tracking device housing a multi-GNSS module connecting to GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou satellite networks simultaneously.
- The device operates in intelligent low-power cycles, activating when the vehicle moves, stops, or reaches predefined reporting intervals, ensuring multi-year battery life without compromising tracking accuracy.
- Location data is compressed into lightweight packets and transmitted via LoRaWAN radio to nearby gateways, which relay information securely to a cloud-based network server. The server authenticates, decrypts, and routes the data to PsiBorg’s fleet management platform, where fleet managers access live maps, automated alerts, and detailed analytics through a web and mobile application.
- Beyond raw location data, embedded sensors add critical operational context. Accelerometers detect motion, harsh braking, and impact events. Tamper sensors alert managers to unauthorized vehicle access. Temperature sensors monitor cargo conditions for sensitive shipments. Together, these sensors transform the tracker from a simple GPS device into a comprehensive vehicle intelligence unit.

LoRa GPS Device
Features of LoRa based Location Tracking Solution
1
Real-Time Vehicle Location Tracking
Multi-GNSS module delivers 2–5 metre positioning accuracy, updating fleet managers on vehicle locations in real time across industrial zones, highways, and remote areas, even without cellular coverage.
2
Zone-Based Geofencing & Alerts
Custom virtual zones are defined around depots, loading bays, factories, and restricted areas. Automated alerts fire instantly when a vehicle enters or exits any zone, enabling tighter compliance and faster incident response.
3
Vehicle Entry & Exit Monitoring
Precise timestamps are logged for every arrival and departure at defined facilities, eliminating manual record-keeping and providing accurate turnaround time data for warehouses and industrial checkpoints.
4
Idle Time & Standing Time Detection
The system automatically detects extended vehicle idling or stationary standing at docks and checkpoints, delivering actionable data to reduce fuel waste, lower emissions, and optimize fleet scheduling.
5
Embedded Sensor Analytics:
Accelerometers and tamper sensors provide rich operational context beyond location, detecting harsh driving events, unauthorized access, and cargo condition anomalies for proactive management.

Project Challenges
Designing reliable LoRaWAN coverage across varied operational environments, large industrial compounds, multi-storey warehouses, open highways, and remote rural routes required careful gateway placement planning and antenna configuration to ensure consistent signal penetration and minimal location dropout.
Balancing high-frequency location reporting with ultra-low power consumption required precise firmware engineering. Reporting intervals, sleep cycles, and GNSS acquisition windows were tuned iteratively to achieve multi-year battery performance without sacrificing tracking accuracy during critical vehicle movements.
Connecting the LoRaWAN tracking platform with the client’s existing fleet management workflows, ERP systems, and operations software required extensive API development and testing to ensure seamless data flow and reliable alert delivery without disrupting live operations.
